4 Ways to Make a Recycled Rag Rug.

Mesh Method
Cut a piece of mesh to the required rug size. Cut material (old t shirts) into small strips approx' 2.5cm (1 inch) wide and 13cm (5 inches) long. Poke the material through the mesh (I used the end of a crochet hook) and half knot on the opposite side.

Crochet method
Cut long strips of material (old duvet/sheets) into 2.5cm (1 inch) wide. Using a thick crochet hook chain stitch in an ongoing circle until required rug size. Add lengths of material by knotting ends together. I think this is the quickest method of rug making.

Sewing machine method
Cut small strips of material (old t shirts) 2.5cm (1 inch) wide and 10cm (4 inches) long. Cut a base for the rug (an old towel) to the required rug size; fold and stitch the edges so it does not fray. (I used some old hessian sack.) Using the sewing machine stitch in rows, the centre of each strip.

Plait method
Cut strips of material (old cotton shirts) 2.5cm (1 inch) wide. (Do not use a stretchy material). Plait three strips together. Continue to add strips by sewing lengths together and plaiting. Form the plait into a circle and hand stitch in place.

Rag rugs are very traditional in Greek homes. Few are now handcrafted here from recycled materials as cheap imports from India can be easily purchased. Rag rugs make great bathroom/shower mats in homes or boats and can be machine washed. This is a great winter craft when sitting by a cosy log burner with a glass of mulled wine or hot chocolate.
