Applique.

Applique is ornamental needlework in which pieces or patch of fabric in different shapes and patterns are sewn or stuck onto a larger piece to form a picture or pattern. Its is commonly used as decoration, especially on garments. The technique is accomplished either by hand stitching or machine.

You can choose any theme you like for your design; intricate or simple. Its easier to draw the design first on parchment/tracing paper, then cut it out to use as a template. I recently appliqued some plain cushion covers. Blanket stitch the cushion edges using embroidery thread and add ribbons and buttons for detail. Chain stitch words or names to personalise your item.
