On the immediate approach to a roundabout we entered a lane between two stone gate posts. This then filtered out to a gravel track, hesitant it was the right road. It lead us to the most breathtaking little lake, nestled within luscious green trees, a rock face and distant mountains.
This stunning fresh water, natural lake is a well hidden secret; once seen never forgotten. It has an aura of tranquility about it, where watching the stillness of the water and breathing fresh air relieves you of all worries and tension, transporting you to a real live haven; a healing retreat.
Our first visit in September 2020 was incredibly quiet and we wondered where were all the people?..why was there nobody here experiencing this amazing place? We have since learned that it was once the site of a recreational orphanage, but the buildings at the far end of the lake are now deserted....a forgotten paradise.
The year of September 2021 we were privileged meet Loukas Zapkas, the wonderful owner of https://www.intothewildactivities.com/ who is very passionate about creating his dream at Ziros Lake and has sought a license to develop the lake area for those that wish to be 'at one' with nature, but remember to abide by his rules.
You can participate in outdoor activities such as kayaking/canoeing, walking and mountain biking for those that are energetic. Life jackets are provided for all age groups.
Or take a relaxing swim...the water was a warm 26 degrees.... yoga or meditate.
There is an abundance of wildlife in and around the lake, such as a variety of ducks, geese, visiting swans and goats so don't forget to bring binoculars if this is your preference, (but I would advise not taking dogs) or just simply sit in the shade with a book and watch the sun go down.
Loukas has erected wooden pontoon seating areas and shade in keeping with the natural environment, so please be respectful of his efforts.
You are welcome to take a picnic, but either take your rubbish home of dispose of it in the bins provided. Refreshments are available to purchase.
Whatever month of the year or time of day you visit the view is stunningly beautiful.
We love Ziros Lake and are supportive in helping Loukas develop the rustic facilities to accomplish his dream.
We will be back again....and again...and again.
