Benefit from Short Winter Walks.

We really enjoy going for short walks and exploring our local area which is anywhere around the island of Lefkada. Regular fresh air and exercise is great for the body and taking peaceful moments to relax and learning something new about culture and the environment we live in, is great for emotional wellbeing. I love listening to different sounds, developing my education, photographing views and capturing the smaller delicate details as we walk.
This week we started our short walk in Geni on the eastern side of Lefkada, hugging the coastal path around Tranquil Bay. Even on a cloudy day the views of Vliho and Nidri are spectacular with a backdrop of mountains.

The path gently guides you to Kiriakis Church which sits at the tip of the coast. We passed this little church many times on our yacht when sailing out of the bay but this is my first actual visit on land.

To the left side of the church is a short flight of steep metal steps which lead to a small shrine in the rocks above. Always curious I could not help myself but take a peek.

Sitting quietly on this headland is a wonderfully calm place; listening to the waters lapping and watching fishing vessels bobbing by. In the peak of summer there is a hive of activity on the waters to view.

On the return journey along the same path we came, we noticed a small gate which opened to reveal the burial tomb of Wilhelm Dorpfeld.

Wilhelm Dorpfeld was a German architect and archaeologist who died in 1940 on the island of Lefkada in Greece where he had a house, believing that the bay of Nidri on the eastern coast of Lefkada was the historical Ithaca, home of Odysseus in Hormes Odyssey.

A quiet moment to take in the views before resuming our journey homeward.

Enjoy exploring and remember it does not have to be an arduous climb or hours of kilometers trekking.
