Nidri Waterfalls. Lefkada

Between Christmas and New Year is the perfect time to take a refreshing walk to burn off some over indulged calories. We may be in lockdown but walking exercise is still permitted with two others. Its a little unfortunate that the weather has taken a turn for the worst this week, but I have always said that with the correct waterproof clothing to protect you from the elements, this should not be a problem.

We managed to find time last week during a spell of sunshine for a walk to Nidri Waterfalls. After a week of torrential rain the falls and river below were flowing at their best; glistening in the sunshine with the sounds of rushing waters cascading over boulders into rock pools.

The rain had caused some damage to the approaching road before the café parking, pathway, handrails and the wooden bridge.

I suggest if travelling by car, to park at the football grounds until the road has been repaired. When walking don't forget to look at the river below the road as it meanders towards the approaching falls. The overhanging shadows of the trees, rushing waters, dramatic boulders and rocks are so pretty.

In order to access the the waterfall itself I suggest taking a pair of water shoes as the wooden half of the bridge has been washed away and stepping stones are slippery so its safer to walk on the river bed. Great for those who have a little sense of adventure.

The steps are lovely shades of aqua green but again may be slippery and handrails cannot be trusted as support.

On your return walk don't forget to look for detail in nature like the wild cyclamen and iris, gold leaf caped boulders and moss coated stone walls and steps.

In warmer months a walk to the waterfalls can be a welcomed cool break from intense sunshine and temperatures, but remember the waterfalls will then only display a trickle and the river beds are often dry. You can however enjoy snacks and refreshments at the café, which is not open during the winter.
