USES IN YOUR HOME.
Olive oil is not antibacterial or antiseptic but it does have many household uses:
- REMOVE LABELS - a pain to peel off and often leaves an ugly mark behind. Saturate the label with olive oil and let soak in for 15 minutes. The label should then slip off with ease with no mark underneath.
- PROTECT RATTAN AND WICKER - they have become trendy again!!! The materials are quite durable but can crack and loose colour. Rubbing olive oil into your favourite rattan chair or wicker basket will protect the material and help prevent it from breaking. It may also revive its colour and add a little shine.
- SHAVING - olive oil can be used as a safe and natural lubricant for a close shave. Rub in an extra teaspoon after washing your body or face once finished.
- WOODEN FURNITURE POLISH - Dab a small amount of olive oil on a soft rag. Add a bit of white vinegar or citrus juice to add extra cleaning power and add a fresh scent.
- FINGERNAILS - Use a bit of olive oil to massage cuticles, or mix oil and water to soak your hands before a manicure.
- LUBRICATE CUPS AND SPOONS - Rub or spray olive oil on your measuring tools before use for an easy clean-up of sticky substances like honey, grain mustard, and sugar syrups.
- CONTROL HAIR FRIZZ - Rub a bit of olive oil through your hair to tame the frizz and flyaway on humid days and in the winter.
- FREE A STUCK ZIPPER - Use a cotton bud to apply olive oil to the teeth of the zip, then gently ease the tab up or down.
- CARE FOR YOUR CAT - Add a teaspoon of olive oil to your cats food to help prevent hairballs and provide a shiny coat.
- DIY LIP BALM - Mix olive oil with melted bees wax (ratio 1;1) add your favourite essential oil for fragrance. Apply to dry and chapped lips.
- STOP SNORING! - Take a sip of olive oil before bed. Its said to help lubricate your throat muscles and may stop you from snoring.
- SHINE STAINLESS STEEL - a material often used in the kitchen for accessories, cutlery and cookware. Pour olive oil onto a soft cloth and buff items until they shine.
- SLOW TARNISHING SILVER - you cannot stop silver from tarnishing but you can slow the oxidization process that causes tarnish. Dab olive oil onto a soft cloth and rub on polished silver to protect it.
- EXFOLIATE YOUR FACE/HANDS - Rub your face with a mixture of olive oil and sugar or course salt, then rinse.
- BATHEING WATER - Add a few tablespoons of olive oil to your running bath water and be amazed when you towel dry.
- REMOVE MAKE-UP - Dab olive oil under your eyes, on your cheeks and forehead, then wipe with a damp face cloth or cotton pad.
- REMOVE PAINT FROM SKIN - Rub olive oil onto the messy area and allow the oil to soak into the skin for 5 minutes, then rinse with soap and water.
- TREAT HEADLICE - Apply olive oil to hair and leave for 40 minutes. Comb through. Shampoo twice then apply a preventative/deterrent.
- STOP A THROAT TICKLE - take a sip of olive oil to stop the itchy flicker that is making you cough.
- FIX A SQUEAKY DOOR - Use a rag or cotton bud to apply olive oil to the top of the problematic hinge in your home or vehicle. Move the door back and forth until the noise stops.
- SHOE POLISH AND WATER REPELLANT - using a soft cloth rub down your shoes or boots with just a light spray of olive oil to maintain their shine and rewove scratches.
- SOFTEN YOUR SKIN - Rub olive oil daily on dry areas such as feet, heels, elbows, especially after a shower, shaving or waxing.
- CLEAN UP GARDEN TOOLS - Spritz some olive oil on your tools to cut down the dirt buildup.
- CONDITION WORN LEATHER - it looses vitality after a while but olive oil can help make it look brand new again. If the leather is scratched or dull dab a little olive oil onto a damp cloth and rub into the problem area. Be gentle and don't use too much. Great for sofas, jackets, saddles, belts, straps and handbags.
- NAPPY RASH - Gently wipe olive oil onto your baby's bottom to help with the irritation of nappy rash.
